When an identifier is found in the airport registry, the result shows the airport name, municipality, country, ICAO and IATA identifiers where available, coordinates, field elevation and other source-backed registry information.
ICAO airport codes
ICAO location indicators used for airports are commonly four-character identifiers. Examples include LKPR for Václav Havel Airport Prague, KJFK for John F. Kennedy International Airport and EGLL for London Heathrow Airport.
ICAO identifiers are widely used in operational aviation material such as flight plans, METAR and TAF reports and other aeronautical information.
IATA airport codes
IATA airport codes are commonly three letters and are familiar from passenger travel, schedules and baggage handling. For example, PRG identifies the same Prague airport as ICAO code LKPR, JFK corresponds to KJFK, and LHR corresponds to EGLL.
ICAO vs. IATA airport codes
ICAO and IATA identifiers serve different aviation and travel contexts, so an airport may have both. The decoder resolves either identifier to the same airport record when both codes are available.
Not every aerodrome has both an ICAO and an IATA identifier. AviationDecoder only returns an airport when the entered code has an exact match in the captured airport registry. It does not guess an airport from an arbitrary three- or four-character string.
What information does the airport decoder show?
The current airport lookup can show the airport name, municipality, country and region, ICAO and IATA identifiers, airport type, scheduled-service status, geographic coordinates and field elevation where those values are available in the source data.
Runway details, radio frequencies, magnetic variation and other operational information are not inferred when they have not been separately captured and verified.
